Westpack’s Eco Sponge sets a new standard
As sustainability becomes an increasingly important factor in design and production, Westpack has taken yet another step toward a more responsible product portfolio. Targeted development has led to the launch of a more sustainable alternative to the traditional velour foam typically used in jewellery and watch boxes: Eco Sponge.
Sustainability without compromise
Eco Sponge is an innovative foam solution that combines functionality, aesthetics, and environmental responsibility. The material is not only fully recyclable but also contains more than 25% recycled content. This combination of functionality, quality, and sustainability positions Eco Sponge as a game changer in jewellery packaging. It ensures the consumer receives a product that meets practical needs, while aligning with the environmental standards and expectations defining jewellery packaging in 2025.
Working with sustainable alternatives
As part of Westpack’s strategy to actively pursue sustainable alternatives and optimise our product portfolio, we have over the years tested various solutions with different environmental benefits. One such solution was foam based on tall oil, a byproduct of the timber industry. While this material is a more responsible resource than conventional foam, it is not recyclable—making it a less ideal option in a circular economy.
Another solution we continue to offer is FSC®-certified cardboard inserts. This material comes from responsibly sourced resources and is fully recyclable. However, the functionality can be limited, which does not always meet customer expectations for an exclusive product experience in jewellery packaging.
After extensive testing and development, we have now found the optimal balance of sustainability, functionality, and aesthetics in Eco Sponge.
A solution created through strong collaboration
The development of Eco Sponge stems from a long-term, close collaboration between Westpack’s procurement team and one of our strategic raw material suppliers. The combination of a detailed knowledge of the material and a strong focus on sustainability has resulted in a solution that not only meets environmental considerations but also lives up to the quality standards required for luxury packaging.
Eco Sponge feels soft and luxurious in jewellery boxes—fully comparable to traditional velour foam, but with a significantly reduced environmental impact.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the collaboration has resulted in a product optimised for seamless integration into Westpack’s production system, contributing to greater efficiency. The result of this strong partnership is an optimal balance between production optimisation, environmental responsibility, and functionality in the final product.
