Eco-friendly jewellery box inserts

Several decades ago, we did not experience a demand for sustainable packaging. But in recent years, many of our customers have made inquiries. That is partly what made us launch our own ECO label with eco-friendly products. Many have asked for eco-friendly jewellery boxes, and consequently, we have introduced several series made from FSC®-certified cardboard. So far so good. But what about the inserts? Well, we thought you might ask, so we have prepared this guide for you.

The timeless jewellery box foam insert has been the go-to lining for aeons. And with good reason: it is easy to use, looks good, and even adds a touch of luxuriousness to the boxes. But foam remains foam - for better for worse, and foam is made from plastic.

The foam used in Westpack’s jewellery boxes is made in Europe. Therefore, the suppliers are subject to EU’s strict rules and regulations for emissions, production processes, and working conditions. But this does not change the fact that the product has an environmental impact.

If you want your jewellery boxes to be eco-friendly through-and-through, there are a couple of different options:

Substituting the foam insert for tissue paper or cotton wool

This is an excellent alternative to jewellery box inserts. However, you can’t be sure that the jewellery will stay in place during transport. If you ship your jewellery, this is worth remembering.

Can you replace a foam insert by a piece of cardboard? It might sound too good to be true, but it is not! We make an updated version of our eco-friendly Boston ECO jewellery boxes with sustainable inserts made of FSC®-certified cardboard. Each insert has a velvety topcoat, one you might recognize from its foam counterpart. This topcoat is made from viscose, which is a natural by-product from wood production.

Once your jewellery and insert are snugly in place in a jewellery box, the result looks very similar to a traditional foam-filled jewellery box.

In 2022 we had the pleasure of releasing our new inserts made from 100% renewable raw material. In fact, the inserts consist of processed pine trees from Finland! First, pine trees are cut down and turned into pulp wood, which is delivered to a pulp mill. Here, it is boiled in an alkali solution. This generates a substance known as black liquor. When the water from the black liquor is evaporated, you are left with something called black liquor soap, that can be skimmed off. Once this substance is acidulated, we are left with Crude Tall Oil (CTO), that can be used to make many different things like paints, soaps, detergents, and sheets of foam.

On a chemical level, CTO is a polyolefin (a type of bio-polymer). Despite the intricate production process, the inserts are still made from 100% renewable raw material. The clear advantage of the new sustainable foam inserts is the fact that they are not made from plastic, which means that the sustainable foam has a much lower carbon footprint.
