Meet Justine: How Imperfection and Two Pairs of Pliers Built JOYO Jewelry

Have a quick scroll through JOYO Jewelry’s Instagram, and you’ll instantly catch a rather lovely, unique, and premium vibe. From her studio in France, independent designer Justine Heckel crafts every single piece by hand, running her business on one simple truth: that beauty hides in the imperfect. What started as a cozy project to keep lockdown boredom at bay back in 2020 has quietly evolved into a full-time passion.

From daydreaming in maths class to a full-time gig

Justine’s journey didn’t kick off with a grand boardroom plan. In fact, her creative spark has always been slightly unstoppable. "When I was younger, my teachers often wrote comments on my report cards like: "Cannot sit still and spends maths class drawing,"" Justine says. "Looking back, I think I have always loved dreaming, imagining, and creating my own little world."

"I’ve always been drawn to things that aren't perfectly smooth or symmetrical. I love raw gemstones just as nature intended, rough textures, and unexpected shapes. For me, jewellery should feel real and carry a bit of a story."

Fast forward to the 2020 pandemic, and that same urge to create resurfaced. To fight off the lockdown boredom, she picked up two pairs of pliers and a bit of wire to keep her hands busy at the living room table. After making a handful of pieces inspired by her travels, a close friend planted the seed that changed everything: "You know, you could actually make a living out of this." And just like that, JOYO was born. Even the name is beautifully simple—a clever little marriage of Joy and Jewel.

Making the postman’s arrival a bit magical

For Justine, the magic doesn't begin when you first slip a ring onto your finger. It starts the exact second the package lands on the doormat. She has mastered the art of the presentation, turning a simple routine into a flawless transition between her workspace and the customer's hands.

JOYO Jewelry elegant unboxing experience

"Many of my customers treat themselves to celebrate a special milestone," Justine says. "I want that lovely feeling to kick in straight away. The crisp box you open, the tissue paper you unfold, the tiny sticker you peel back... all those little details count. The packaging is the absolute first impression, and it tells the customer right away just how much love has gone into the making."

The pink and green thread

When it came to pinning down her visual identity, the palette practically chose itself. Justine fell for a soft blend of natural green and delicate pink, creating a flawless backdrop for her raw, distinctive jewellery. Through Westpack, she sourced packaging that hit those exact, dreamy shades to wrap her entire brand universe together beautifully.

JOYO green custom jewellery packaging

"The combination of green and pink felt completely natural to me," Justine explains. "These soft, natural colors perfectly reflect the JOYO universe: nature, delicacy, plants, and gemstones. The packaging I chose fits seamlessly into this universe, helping me communicate the handcrafted and premium image that I want my customers to experience."

Justine’s 3 golden rules for independent makers:

  • Pick your signature shades early: Find two colors that truly speak for your universe and stick to them. A consistent palette makes your brand instantly recognizable in a crowded feed.
  • Don’t wait for the stars to align: You really don't need a flawless studio to start. JOYO began on a living room table with just two pairs of pliers and a dream. Just start.
  • Design for the goosebumps: The product is only half the story; the atmosphere is the rest. Thoughtful presentation, premium packaging, and tiny handwritten notes are what turn a simple purchase into a beautiful memory.
