EUTR explained
EUTR stands for the EU Timber Regulation. The regulation was introduced to prevent illegal logging and to ensure that only legally harvested timber and timber products can be sold on the European market.
In short, it means:
- A ban on trading illegally harvested timber in the EU.
- A requirement that companies importing timber materials (so-called operators) must have a Due Diligence System in place to ensure traceability throughout the supply chain.
- All actors in the value chain must be able to document compliance with the rules.
Purpose and significance
The purpose of EUTR is to protect forests, biodiversity, and the climate by preventing illegally harvested timber from entering the EU. At the same time, the regulation helps create fair competition conditions for companies that trade responsibly.
At Westpack, we go beyond the minimum legal requirements. For example, wooden boxes and wooden displays are not directly covered by EUTR, but we have chosen to include them in our Due Diligence System. This is a deliberate choice to stay ahead of potential future requirements and support our FSC® certification and broader sustainability efforts.
How does Westpack ensure compliance?

- Documents that our suppliers use legally sourced materials.
- Is continuously updated in line with new experiences, changes in legislation, or adjustments from authorities.
- Has been tested and strengthened though dialogue and feedback from both authorities and NGOs.
The system is further supported by our FSC certification, which reduces the risk of illegal timber in our products and enhances transparency throughout the value chain.
