This year too, Westpack took part in an Open School Project organised by the Rolf Krake School in Holstebro. The project concerns a relevant customer case from Westpack for the 14-year old pupils.

‘Help a customer to pick a name and logo, produce jewellery boxes, bags and display with an eco-friendly profile, and produce a business budget for the production’. This was the task Westpack put before the 14-year old pupils, in the last week of September.

The pupils invited a delegation from Westpack to a fair, held Friday afternoon, where each of the nine groups presented their results in their own booth. They put their creative display solutions and jewellery boxes on display, and explained their reasons behind the brand name, logo, and designs. In this, they included goals regarding the sustainability of the products and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Westpack were presented with triangular, round and moon-shaped jewellery boxes in beautiful colours, each personalised with a drawn, printed or embroidered logo (photos below). The pupils made the products themselves, in school, using recycled materials and wood found in the local forest. The pupils presented creative solutions, each accompanied by a detailed business budget, ensuring their economic profitability. The pupils also presented their marketing strategy for social media and Google, using celebrity ambassadors and sustainable solutions.

Westpack were impressed to see what the pupils achieved in just a week. Henrik Hansen, sales manager, elaborates: ‘It is very inspiring to visit these students and feel their commitment to the designing of jewellery packaging. We, in turn, are inspired by the youngsters’ outtake on design, SoMe and not least their focus on sustainability. There is no doubt in my mind that this project is mutually beneficial.’ For Westpack, supporting projects in the local community is essential. ‘We can give the pupils insight into the tasks and challenges that they can expect within a company’.

The Rolf Krake School considers the cooperation to be especially valuable. Gitte Gibson, a representative of the school, explains: ‘I have never experienced a company putting as much commitment and as many resources into a school project as Westpack does. Seen from an educational point of view, this makes the project extra valuable because it is more realistic for the pupils.’

Lotte Due Brander, also from the Rolf Krake School, adds: ‘The cooperation has been excellent. For us, it is worth its weight in gold that the pupils reach out to the real world, outside the school boundaries, and receive insights into what the different corporate jobs entail.’

The Open School Project is part of Westpacks CSR-profile and the company’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (Goal 17: “Revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development”.) This was the second time Westpack participated in the local Open School Project, where young students receive insights into corporate processes, CSR and sustainability.
